The Municipality of Zografou belongs to the Athens Central District of the Attica Region and is 4 km from the center of Athens. Bordering the north with the Papagou-Cholargos Municipality and the City of Athens, to the south with the Kesariani Municipality and the City of Athens, westwards with the City of Athens and eastwards with the mountain of Hymettus, which offers breathtaking green.
The Municipality has an area of 8,520km2 and a population of 71,026 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The district of Zografou includes the districts of Goudi and Ilisia.
The first timid steps of settlement in the area took place in 1832, after the Revolution of 1821 and the liberation from the Turks. At the same time, the abbot of the Monastery of Petrakis bought many acres of land from the Pasha of Athens. Later this property was shared by the heirs of the abbot. At the beginning of the 20th century, the MP Ioannis Zografos bought a large area of the area, divided it into plots and sold it. So began the substantial settlement of the area that took the name of Zografos.
In 1965, the Greek government granted about 1100 acres to the University of Athens. Today Zografou Campus and the Zografou Polytechnic School are operating in the Municipality of Zografou.
