The Municipality of Zacharo belongs to the Prefecture of Ilia and its current form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Zacharo and Figalia, according to the Kallikratis program.
The municipality has an area of ​​275.65km2 and a population of 8,953 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the municipality of Zacharo is the homonymous city.
The city of Zacharo was founded with the birth of the new Greek state, but archaeological excavations show that there was life since ancient times. It is an area with a strong tourist element, since it has many beaches. In August 2007, Zacharo was tested by devastating fires that have left irreparable wounds in human lives as well as property.
Close to Zacharo is the spa town of Kaiafa with the islet of St. Catherine in the center of a small lake. The thermal springs of Kaifa are well known. The waters flow from the cave of Anigrides and are believed to have healing properties.
