The Municipality of Volos belongs to the Prefecture of Magnesia of the Region of Thessaly and its present form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Volos, Iolkou, Nea Anchialos, Agria, Portaria, Nea Ionia, Artemida and Aisonia and the municipality of Makrinitsa, according to the Kallikratis program.
The Municipality has an area of 387,14km2 and a population of 144,449 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Volos is the city of Volos.
Volos is close to the site of ancient Iolkos. It should be noted that ancient Magnesia was one of the first areas inhabited in Greece.
Forty Neolithic settlements of the 7th-8th millennium BC were discovered in the area. Mycenaean sites have also been discovered on the hill of Agioi Theodoroi. This is the time when the founding of Iolkos, an area most of which has been interwoven with the legend of the Argonautic Campaign.
In 293-292 BC, the Macedonian king Demetrios Poliorketis founded the city of Demetriada, which became a military center of the Macedonians due to its location and then evolved into a commercial center. The city had a palace, a market, a theater.
In 197 BC, the Romans conquered the city, which flourished. Byzantine times were also an important center. Indeed, in the 5th century AD, Demetrias became the seat of a bishop.
In the 6th century the area experienced Slavic raids. In 1423 the Ottomans occupied the area and the economic power was transferred to Pelion, which in the process became a spiritual center.
In the Revolution of 1821, the inhabitants of Pelion revolted, but the Turks suppressed the revolution.
After 1830, Volos began to be built outside the old castle. Its geographical position and port helped to evolve the city.
In 1881 the Greek army entered the city. In 1897 for a while the area fell into the hands of the Turks.
During the recent years Volos was an industrial city, it had significant trade and exports through its harbor.
Today Volos is one of the largest and most beautiful cities in Greece. It has an excellent layout, a wonderful beach with many and varied shops and a beautiful natural environment that make up Pelion's hills with fruit trees, wonderful sandy beaches and blue waters.
Pelion, according to mythology, was the summer residence of the Gods and the homeland of the Centaurs. Portaria and Makrinitsa, built on the western slopes of Pelion, are among the most developed tourist villages. Portaria is famous for its mansions and Makrinitsa is a traditional settlement.
