The Municipality of Lavreotiki belongs to the Peripheral Unity of Eastern Attica and its present form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Lavreotiki, Keratea and the community of Agios Konstantinos, according to the Kallikratis Program.
The Municipality has an area of 176,87 km2 and a population of 25,102 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Lavreotiki is the city of Lavrion.
Lavrio is a coastal town and is located southeast of Athens. The city was mainly known for its mining and mining mines. Since ancient times there has been a great deal of silver production, so the Lavrion peak began in 483 BC. For years production has been either blooming or declining. The owner of the mines in ancient times was Athens and it is believed that to a large extent its acne was due to the laureating wealth. Wonderful was the way they used to mining and cleaning the ores. Indeed, the word Lavreu, meaning laurel, means passage, stoa.
The newer history of exploitation of Lavrion deposits began in 1864. On the occasion of this event, Lavrion concentrated a workforce and many industrial enterprises, such as textiles, chemicals, matches, etc. were created in the wider region.
Over the last decades, however, ore mining has ceased and most industries have shut down, resulting in a major unemployment problem in the region.
All these industries, along with the operation of the PPC power station located in the area, have burdened the Lavrio environment over the years. The post-2010 PPC plant produces gas-fired power, reducing contamination.
Today, Lavrio is a modern city with squares, proper urbanism and many neoclassical buildings. An important role is played by the port that runs on some islands, while in the marina it has many sailboats. For this reason, there are shipbuilding units as well as marine equipment stores.
In recent years, Lavrion has attracted a lot of people because it has many restaurants, cafeterias and nightclubs.
From the coastal road and a few kilometers before Lavrio, at the southernmost tip of Attica is the famous Cape of Sounio with the famous Temple of Poseidon.
Sounio or the Cavolones with the magnificent ancient temple is one of the most tourist spots in Attica.
During the Archaic years a temple of Athena Sounias was built on a lower hill. In the 5th century BC the construction of the Temple of Poseidon began but it was not completed because the work was destroyed by the Persians. In 444 BC, the Athenians built the newest temple, from marbles that came from the ancient quarries of Agrilesza Lavrion.
Sounion was fortified and considered to be one of the most powerful walls in Attica. Today some parts of the fortress have survived.
Many believe that from the Cape of Sounio you see the best sunset in Attica.
