The Municipality of Skyros belongs to the Prefecture of Euboea, in the Region of Central Greece and consists of the island of Skyros, the largest of the Sporades Complex, located 22 nm from Kymi in Euboea.
The municipality has an area of 209 sq km and a population of 2,994 inhabitants, according to the last census of 2011.
The capital of the island is the imposing Chora of Skyros, which is built high on a rock.
According to the mythology in King Lycomedes, Theseus had asked refuge, but he was pushed off a cliff and found a tragic death. In 468 BC the Athenian general Kimon occupied Skyros, found Theseus' tomb and transported his bones to Athens. It is also said that Lycomedes hid Achilles, a dressed girl, on the island in order not to participate in the Trojan War. There Odysseus discovered him and took him with him.
The Macedonians conquered Skyros in 322 BC, followed by the Romans in 196 BC. Like other islands, Skyros lived through the Byzantine period, the Venetian occupation, and in 1538 was ruled by the Ottomans until 1832, when liberation came.
Skyros is a beautiful island with Chora built amphitheatrically, with a mark on the top of the castle of King Lycomedes. The island has many Byzantine and post-Byzantine buildings to display. The church of the Dormition of the Theotokos of 895 is built inside the castle, while the famous monastery of Ag. George Skyrianos, founded in 960 by the Byzantine Emperor Nikiforos Fokas.
Skyros has excellent hotels or small studios, food shops and nightlife venues.
Very good beaches for swimming are Kalamitsa, Magazia, Aspos, Atsitsa, Pefkos, Caves etc.
Skyros stands out from the other islands of the Sporades, due to its folk tradition and art in pottery, embroidery, but also in the wonderful and unique wood carvings of Skyros, which are renowned all over the world.
