The Municipality of Sifnos belongs to the Cyclades Prefecture of the South Aegean Region. The island of Sifnos is located between Serifos, Kimolos and Antiparos.
The Municipality has an area of 73.9 km2 and a population of 2.625 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Sifnos is Apollonia.
Tradition says that the name of the island is due to Sifnos, son of Sounios.
The first inhabitants of Sifnos were the Pelasgians, followed by the Cretans. The island experienced great growth during the Early Cycladic era, but also during the Mycenaean Age. The Archaic years were one of the richest islands of the Cyclades due to its gold mines, silver mines and quarries. After the Persian Wars, Sifnos became a member of the Athenian Alliance. It was followed by Roman times and the Byzantine era and during Sultanate, Sifnos became a member of the Duchy of the Aegean. In 1307 Sifnos captured the Spanish Giannoulis Da Coronda, who belonged to the Order of the Knights of Rhodes. In 1464 Sifnos was commanded by the family of Gödzantini until 1566 when the Ottomans conquered it.
Today's Sifnos is biting every summer by thousands of visitors. Inside the island there are seven traditional settlements that are a single complex: Exambela, Katavati, Apollonia, Pano Petali, Artemonas, Io-Loukas, Kato Petali.
In all the settlements of the island, the architecture of the houses is unique, while the beautiful mansions are also missing. The area of Kastro is the old capital of the island. This historic village is perched on a rock. At that point Da Coronda built the Venetian fortress that has been preserved to this day. The houses in Kastro are very old, the alleys are narrow and covered by arches.
The sandy beaches of Sifnos are well-known, most famous in Platy Gialos, while very good are in Vathi and Faros.
Sifnos is famous for its pottery. Ceramic works of the Siphones are known in many parts of the world and there are several exports. Sifnos is also the home of famous chef Nikos Chelmentes.
