The Municipality of Serifos belongs to the Cyclades Prefecture of the South Aegean Region. The island of Serifos is located northwest of Sifnos and south of Kythnos.
The Municipality has an area of 75.2km2 and a population of 1.420 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Serifos is the country of Serifos.
Tradition says that in Serifos, a larnaca was washed, where the king of Argos had put his daughter Danae and her son Perseus, because according to the Delphi oracle his grandson would kill him. Perseus, the son of Zeus, grew up in Serifos, the fisherman of Reiki, who was the brother of the tyrant king of Polysekitos. Perseus growing up killed the mermaid Medusa, and her head faded King Polydeker.
On the island Aeolians were originally settled from Thessaly and later Ionians from Attica. During the Persian Wars, Serifos fought against the Persians, then became a member of the First and Second Athenian Alliance. It was conquered by the Macedonians, the Ptolemy and the Romans. In 1204 with the founding of the Duchy of the Aegean, Serifos came to families of Italian nobility. The island received the attacks of Barbarossa and in 1566 it was conquered by the Ottomans.
Serifos grew strongly due to the extraction of large quantities of iron ore in the first half of the 20th century. The mines were closed in 1963.
Serifos, although it has very barren terrain, has excellent beaches such as Koutalas, Livadios, Psili Ammos, Ambelio. Important settlements are Livadi, which is also the port of the island, the built amphitheater, Megalo Livadi, Koutalas in the south.
It is one of the Cycladic islands with a lot of tourism, remarkable hotels, shops and nightlife.
East of Serifos is the island of rock Vos and Northeast the Serpopoula.
