The Municipality of Peristeri belongs to the Western Sector of Athens of the Attica Region, it has an area of 10,050 km2 and a population of 139,981 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011. It is one of the most populous municipalities in Attica.
It is located northwest of Athens and extends to the foothills of Mount Poikilos.
There are several versions to name it. The most prominent is that in Peristeri, today, there was the Byzantine Municipality of Holargos, one of the ten tribes of ancient Athens, while others believe that the name originated from Perisher-Aga, which included the area of the municipality during the Ottoman rule .
Later the area passed from several hands like the fighter Soutsos, the French Superior and others. In the 19th century there was a small settlement.
The modern history of Peristeri begins after the Asia Minor Disaster, where refugees settled in this area, as in other Attica. Thus, a refugee settlement was created in Peristeri.
For many years Peristeri was a settlement housing large and poor families.
Today, the densely populated Peristeri is a modern municipality with a very good commercial market. Bournazis, one of the areas of the commune, is famous for its vibrant nightlife and luxury boutiques.
