The Municipality of Patra belongs to the Prefecture of Achaia of the Peloponnese and in its present form it emerged from the merger of the former municipalities of Vrachnai, Messata, Paralia and Rion, according to the Kallikratis program.

Patras is the capital of the Prefecture of Achaia and the third largest city in Greece. Its name comes from Spartan Achaeus Patras, who grew up, fortified and used the existing city. During the Peloponnesian War, Patras sometimes took part of the Athenians and sometimes the Spartans. Later the city played an important role in the formation of the Achaic Confederacy. In 146 BC, Patras was subordinated to the Romans, who gave many privileges to the city, and Patras was to flourish. When the capital of the Roman state was transferred to Constantinople, Patras began to decline. Later it was besieged by Avars and Slavs. In 1205 he was captured by the Frankish crusaders and in 1429 was liberated by the then Despot of Mystras Konstantinos Palaiologos, later emperor of Byzantium. In 1458 Patras was subjugated to the Ottomans. In 1687 the city was besieged by the Venetians and subjugated until 1715. In 1821 the Greek Revolution was declared by the Dean of the Old Patron Germanos. Patra has been besieged and destroyed during the revolutionary times. The town was rebuilt by John Capodistrias.
From 1820 until 1920 Patras was the largest harvesting port of raisins. This has resulted in tremendous economic growth in the industry and trade of the region and the upgrading of the living standards of its inhabitants. After 1922 and the Asia Minor Catastrophe, many families from Asia Minor settled in the area.
Today, Patras is the administrative, commercial, economic and cultural center of Western Greece and has many attractions.
The Roman Stage in the center of the city dates back to the 1st century AD. A.D. The Roman Aqueduct, which is a work of the Roman era and a donation of emperors.
