The Municipality of Nisyros belongs to the Dodecanese Prefecture of the South Aegean Region and includes the island of Nisyros located northwest of Rhodes and between Kos, Tilos and Astypalea.
The municipality has an area of 50,1km2 and a population of 1,008 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Nisyros is Mandraki.
Tradition says that God of the Sea Neptune, in order to kill giant Polybotis, took a rock off the island of Kos and threw it. From this rock was born the island of Nisyros. It is also said that Polybotis, though plagued by the rock, did not die but lives beaten. His wounds make him groom and for that according to myth, the island trembles and its volcano explodes. Nisyros is a purely volcanic island and belongs to the volcanic arc of the Aegean Sea.
It seems that the first inhabitants of Nisyros were Kares. There are findings proving that there was a town from the Copper Age, but also within the walls of the Acropolis there was a city from the 5th century BC until the 5th century AD. Nisyros was conquered by the Queen of Alikarnassos Artemisia. The Knights of the Order of St. John defeated the island and in 1315 they built the Venetian castle and in 1600 the monastery of Panagia Spiliani was built next to it. The Turks followed in 1522 and in 1912 the Italians. Nissiros joined with Greece in 1948.
The island's volcano has affected the soil morphology with black rocks that contrasted with white houses and rich vegetation. Nisyros experienced underwater explosions 150,000 years ago, but the basic activity occurred 40 to 10 thousand years ago. The island has volcanic mountains. In the center of Nisyros there is the caldera, where there is probably the largest hydrothermal crater in the world, 300 meters in diameter.
The island has many picturesque villages, such as Nikia, Poles, Emporeios. Impressive is the Hochlaki beach with black pebbles.
