The Municipality of Nea Smyrni belongs to the Southern District of Athens of the Attica Region.
It has an area of ​​3,524km2 and a population of 73,076 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The Municipality of Nea Smyrni was built in the 1920s, specifically in 1926, when the area was given to the refugees of the Asia Minor Destruction of Smyrna in 1922. That is why the area was named Nea Smyrna in memory of the city that the refugees left behind. In one of the hills of the area, the Metropolitan Church of Agia Fotini dominates the famous bell tower, an exact copy of the one that existed in Aghia Fotini of Smyrna until 1922. At a central point of the area is the Home of Hestia and the Iosifoglio Orphanage.
Fifty acres covers the Nea Smyrna Alps, a venue and events. The famous square of Nea Smyrni with its dozens of shops attracts patrons of all ages from many areas of Attica. In this municipality is the Panionios Athletic Club. Known schools such as the Lyceum of the Longevity and the Standard Experimental Gymnasium Lyceum of the Evangelical School have their headquarters in Nea Smyrni
