The Municipality of Lesvos belongs to the Prefecture of Lesvos and is an island of the Region of the North Aegean. Its current form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Mytilini, Mantamados, Agiasos, Agia Paraskevi, Eressos-Antisis, Polichinos, Plomari, Petras, Mithymna, Loutropoleos, Thermi, Kalloni, Evergetoulas and Geras, according to the Kallikratis program.
The Municipality of Lesbos, which includes the island of Lesbos and its neighboring islands, has an area of 1633,83km2 and a population of 86,436 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality is Mytilene.
According to historians, the island was first inhabited by about 3000 BC by a people of the East. In 1100 BC, the Aeolians settled in Lesvos. Thus, the six major ancient cities developed: Mytilene, Mithymna, Aris, Antissa, Eressos and Pyrra. Lesvos experienced great spiritual growth. Particularly in the 7th century appeared Arion, the poet Alcaios and the lyric poet Sappho.
When the island was occupied by the Persians, spiritual blossoming was interrupted. In 479 BC, Lesvos joined the Athenian Alliance, but at the beginning of the Peloponnesian War, the island was sometimes under the Spartans and sometimes under the Athenians. The Romans followed in 84 BC. Byzantine times, Lesvos, was offered by Emperor Ioannis Palaiologos to the Genoese brother-in-law of Fragisco Gateluzo. The rulers of the Gattelouzos were preserved on the island until 1462, when Muhammad II captured it. Pillages and massacres followed, and generally throughout the years of the Ottoman occupation, Lesbos was distressed. The liberation came in 1912.
The capital of the Municipality, Mytilene is a very beautiful seaside town that combines the old with the new. Impressive are its old mansions, the historic fortress that dominates the pine-covered hill, its churches, such as the 17th-century metropolitan church of St. Athanasius, etc.
Lesvos has enchanting beaches, such as Geras and Kalloni. The picturesque Molyvos is one of the most famous areas of the island. The traditional settlement with colorful houses is built around the hill that has a castle on its top.
West of the island is Sigri, with the enchanting bay. Opposite is the island of Nissiopi with fossilized trees at the bottom of the sea.
Close to Eressos - there are ruins of the ancient city and two early-Christian basilicas of the 5th century - lies the fossil forest, with trunks with a diameter of more than three meters and a height of 10 meters and smaller.
Varya is the homeland of the popular painter Theophilos.
Lesvos is full of olives and pines. It is famous for the production and quality of its oil and its cheese. The most delicious sardines are caught in Kalloni. Ouzo is also produced.
Lesvos is very close to Turkey.
