According to mythology, Mykonos took its name from Mykonos, the descendant of the king of Delos, Annios, the years of the Trojan War and who was the son of Apollo and the nymph Rious, daughter of Dionysus.
According to the findings, Mykonos inhabited the 4th millennium BC. Traces have been found in Mavrospilia, Armenistis and Ftelia. In other places there have been traces of the Middle Cycladic era. Indeed, there are signs that Mykonos was one of the centers of Cycladic culture. Many finds of the Late Helladic-Mycenaean Age have also been discovered. Mykonos was then settled in the Ionian Islands.
After the Persian Wars the island joined the Delian Alliance and then the Second Alliance. The Venetians followed, and in 1292, the island was plundered by the Catalans. In 1537 Mykonos was captured by the Turks and Barbarossa attacked fiercely. Those who did not manage to leave were sold as slaves. During the course of the Ottoman domination, Mykonos was a great naval center. In the Revolution of 1821, the Mykonians were precious warriors with a prominent personality, Manto Mavrogenous.
Delos is 6km from the southwestern part of Mykonos. This island was one of the most important religious sites in antiquity. The legend says that Hera chased by Leto, Leto, pregnant with the fruit of Jupiter's love, fled to the island of Delos to give birth. They believed that this island had emerged from the sea to accept Leto, one that the rest of the islands did not accept the pregnancy, for fear of Hera. There Leto touched on a palm tree gave birth to Apollo and Artemis.
Delos was first inhabited in the 3rd millennium BC, while the Ionians settled in the 10th century BC. Later the island became a great religious center, something the Athenians wanted to exploit. In 478 BC they made the island the first alliance of Delos with the aim of dominating the islands. In 457 BC, the contribution fund of Delos was transferred to Athens. All the years, due to the celebrations that took place on the island in honor of Apollo, Artemis and Leto, the Athenians sent the ship of Theseus loaded with animals and tributes. Athenian sovereignty was stopped by the Macedonians in 315 BC and thus the island was able to grow in the economy and trade. The Romans followed, but again the prosperity did not stop. Delos also traded other peoples of the ancient world. Even the Italians built their own temples in Delos. With the Mithridatic War in 88 BC, the decline of the island began, the temples and the houses were burned and the thousands of residents were either killed or sold as slaves. In the following years the pirates followed an almost uninhabited island.
The island of Delos is almost full of antiquities. The most famous monument is the marble lions in the area of ​​the Lions Avenue. There is also the sanctuary of Apollo, the temple of Artemis, the market of Theophrastus, the market of the Kometaiasts, the gallery of Philip E, the Iera Odos, the Agora of Agios Kyrikou, the Prytaneion, the Bouleuterion, the Artemisio, Minoa Fountain, Stage, Gymnasium, Theater, Synagogue, Thesmophorion, Sanctuary of Hera, Ecclesiastical and many others.
Delos has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
