The Municipality of Lemnos belongs to the Prefecture of Lesvos and is an island of the Region of the North Aegean. Its current form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Myrina, Moundros, Atsiki, Nea Koutalis, according to the Kallikratis program.
The Municipality has an area of ​​476 km2 and a population of 16,992 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Lemnos is Myrina.
In ancient times the island had two active volcanoes on the tops of its mountains. The legend says that Zeus threw one of these mountains to Hephaestus to live away from Mount Olympus.
According to Homer, the first inhabitants of Lemnos were the mythical Sindis, who cared for the disabled and exiled Hephaestus. Again according to mythology, the first king of Lemnos was Thaas, the wife of Myrina, the daughter of the king of Iolkos. At that time, the women of the island, headed by his daughter, Thananda, Ypsipylus, drunk and killed the men of the island, except the king, to avenge them.
Then women joined the Argonauts, and Ypsypylus married their leader Jason. From this union the Minyans were born.
From the excavations was found the ancient city of Poliochni, which belongs to the 4th millennium BC. In 1000 BC the Pelasgians or the Tyrrhenians settled on the island. Two other ancient cities were founded, Hephaestus and Myrina.
Lemnos was conquered by the Persians and then became a member of the Athenian Alliance. They followed as conquerors, the Macedonians, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Genoese. The island fell into the hands of the Turks in 1479. The liberation came in 1912.
The seaside Myrina, which is also the port of the island, is built on the site of the ancient city. What impresses is the Genoese Castle. The island has many picturesque villages and beautiful sandy beaches.
From an archaeological point of view remarkable points are the Kavieri Sanctuary, which preserves the ruins of buildings of the 7th and 6th centuries BC, which was the place of worship of the Kavers. Large ceremonies took place in large rooms, as in Samothraki. Poliochni is the oldest Neolithic settlement of the Aegean. Hephaestia is the largest ancient city of Lemnos.
Moundros is the second port of the island.
