The Municipality of Platanias belongs to the prefecture of Chania and in its present form was established by the merger of the former municipalities of Platanias, Voukolies, Kolimbari and Mousouron.
The municipality of Platanias currently has 495.43km2 and a population of 16,874 inhabitants according to the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the municipality is Gerani.
The Municipality of Platanias is considered the most tourist destination of the prefecture of Chania, with dozens of hotel units and shops. It is an area that, besides its organized beaches, has points of rich natural beauty, nature trails, canyons, etc. It has intense nightlife and attracts young people from all over the world.
To the west of the municipality is Maleme, a historic village, since 1941 was the occupation of the airport that existed in the area by paratroopers Germans. The inhabitants of Maleme resisted with meager means, without result. From this airport was the supply of the Germans that led to the occupation of the great island.
Near the Maleme there is also the German Cemetery, where 4,465 Germans who died in Crete in the Second World War rested.
