The Municipality of Monemvasia belongs to the Prefecture of Laconia, Peloponnese, and its current form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Monemvasia, Mola, Zaraka, Asopos and Vion, according to the Kallikratis program.
The municipality has an area of 908.2km2 and a population of 23,853 inhabitants.
The headquarters of the Municipality of Monemvasia are the Molai.
Monemvasia is particularly well-known for its castle-built fortress, which is linked to the land of the Peloponnese through a narrow lane. The founding of the castle is considered to have taken place in the 6th century AD. The visitor to Monemvasia has many things to admire, such as balconies, cobblestone streets, restored houses, shelters, Byzantine churches. One of the sights is the house of the great poet Yiannis Ritsos, but also the square with the church of Elkomeno Christos, the 16th century mosque and the old cannon. The church of Elkomeno Christ was built in the 13th century by Andronikos II Palaiologos, and was changed by the Venetians.
The Archaeological Collection of Monemvasia is hosted in the mosque. There are also 40 churches that can be visited, such as Hagia Sophia, Panagia of Kritikia and others. Few people today are the inhabitants of the castle town. Most stay in Nea Monemvasia, which extends in front of the narrow passage to the rock.
The Molai, which is also the capital of the municipality, took its name from the mills that existed in the area and which, according to the wind dialect, were called . Ruins of these still exist today at the top of the city.
