The Municipality of Lokros belongs to the Prefecture of Fthiotida of the Region of Sterea Ellada and its present form is due to the consolidation of the former Municipalities of Atalanti, Dafnousion, Oponti and Malesina, according to the Kallikratis Program.
The Municipality has an area of 614.7km2 and a population of 19.710 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the municipality is Atalanti, which is built at the foot of Mount Roda.
The area of Atalanti seems to have been inhabited since the Neolithic Age (7,000 BC - 3100 BC). The name "Taladi" is mentioned for the first time in 565 AD.
In 1458 the area was conquered by the Turks. It was liberated on 31 March 1821 by the chieftain Anthony Kontosopoulos and about 1,000 men who fought at his side. A few months later, the Turkish army of Omer Vryonis and Kiosse Mehmet takes prisoners of the city and destroys, burning her homes. Those who were saved went to Attalantonisi. The following year in Atalantonisi residents were infected with infectious disease of the plague and the Turkish army would re-burn the city of Atalanti. In 1824 the Turks conquered Attalantonisi, destroying that there were built, slaughtered and imprisoned those who had fled there.
At the beginning of November 1826, the Battle of Atalanti is taking place and the Greeks retreat after the Turks surprise. The city was finally liberated at the beginning of November 1828.
In April 1941 Atalanta was bombarded by the German Air Force and a few days later it was under the German occupation, where it remained until 1944.
The Municipality of Lokros has several archaeological finds, some of which are:
The cemeteries of two different periods found in the Megaplatan area. In the first cemetery of the Late Helladic period tombs were chambered with a rectangular or square plan. In the second cemetery of the Archaic period the dead were buried in burial pithos in a shy position. Both graveyards, such as rings, vases and an animal-shaped carved stone, were found in both cemeteries.
East of Kalapodi Fthiotida is the Sanctuary of the Apollo of Ava. The identification of some inscriptions helped to identify it and according to Herodotus the sanctuary was worthy of that of Delphi and was one of the most important sanctuaries of ancient Greece. Also according to Herodotus, the sanctuary belonged to the sanctuaries of Phocis which were destroyed after the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. by the Persians. During the excavations, two temples were found, the northern classic and the southern Achaic with earlier or later temples. The southern archaic, which is a better preserved temple, seems to have been completed in the middle of the 6th century BC. Its distinctive feature is the two access ramps to its east and west. Among the findings from the layer of the Persian catastrophe, a bronze beaked scepter was found in the form of a ram's head. Also in the southern archaic temple, but in the finds of the earlier buildings, there were some frescoes of the second half of the 7th century, 13 swords and 5 horns of the second half of the 8th century and a bronze glass decorated with relief from northern Syria.
