The Municipality of Andros belongs to the Cyclades Prefecture of the South Aegean Region and includes the island of Andros and its neighboring islets.
The Municipality has an area of 379,21km2 and a population of 9,221 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The Municipality of Andros is based in Andros.
The island of Andros is the northernmost of the Cyclades, and its peculiarity is that it is the only island that has plenty of greenery. At the same time it has beautiful beaches, crystal blue waters and picturesque villages.
Her name, according to mythology, comes from Andros, the grandson of Apollo. On the island, the Ionians settled in 1000 BC, creating great naval force and colonies in various places. The power of the island seems to have cut its own coins.
Initially, Andros came into competition with Athens, but then joined the First and Second Athenian Alliances. It was conquered by the Macedonians, the Romans. During the Byzantine years there was a great boom on the island, especially spiritual and economic. In 1207 Venetians came to conquer, until 1556, when the Ottomans became masters. In 1830, based on the London Protocol, Andros, like the other Cycladic islands, became members of the independent Greek state.
The town of Andros is built on a cape and on the edge of it there are ruins of a Venetian castle. In the picturesque Chora, the visitor meets the traditional Cycladic architecture and the mansions that dominate in many places. There are three museums in Andros Town, most notably the Museum of Contemporary Art founded by the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation. The Archaeological and Naval Museum are also worth seeing.
Andros has very nice beaches. Some are sandy, such as Nimporio, Chryssi Ammos, Achla, Milos, which are preferred by surfers due to tall waves, but also rocky, such as Yialia, Chalkolimonas and others.
