The Municipality of Kythira belongs to the Peripheral Unity of the Islands of the Attica Region and its present form consists of the islands of Kythera and Antikythira, according to the Kallikratis Program.
The Municipality has an area of 296km2 and a population of 4.041, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Kythira is the city of Kythira.
According to mythology, the goddess Aphrodite was born in the fog of the sea and swim first came to Kythira and then went to Paphos in Cyprus.
Historically, Kythera in ancient times used to call Porfyrosa because of the product of the purple (dye) that existed on the island and for the time it was very rare and valuable. That is why it was the naval base of the Minoans, followed by the Phoenicians and then by the Moines. The island experienced many raids by pirates. In 1207 the Venetian Marcus Veneris proclaimed himself a Marquis of the area and the island was named Cerigo, which in the years changed into Tsirigo, a name that is used today.
In 1537 the terrible pirate Barbarossa destroyed the island. The French, the Turks, the Russians and the English were the dominant ones, until 1864 when Kythira was incorporated with Greece.
Kythira today is a beautiful island, a place of thousands of summer visitors from all over the world. They depart from the south-eastern tip of the Peloponnese, Cape Malea 10Nm. and from Piraeus 195nm. There is also a coastal line of the island with Kastelli Kissamou of the Prefecture of Chania, Crete.
In the picturesque Kythira or Chora dominates the Venetian castle, while the 40 old churches are enviable, just below the Castle.
The island has excellent hotel units and beautiful beaches, such as: Kaladi, Melidoni, Chalkos, Diakofti, Kapsali, Kalamos, Komponada, Fournoi, Kalami etc.
The islet of Antikythera is located between Kythera and Crete. During his classical years his name was Aegila, and there was an ancient city and temple of Aegalea Apollo.
In 1900, the bronze statue of the Antikythera Adolescent was recovered from an old shipwreck dated between 320BC and 330BC. The statue is exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Athens. Also, the Antikythera Mechanism, an ancient complex type of mobile finds (craftsman) that was a mechanical computer and an astronomical observer, was also brought up. The creation of this mechanism is between 150 and 100 times.
