The Municipality of Oropos belongs to the Peripheral Unity of Eastern Attica and its present form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Avlonos and Oropias and the communities of Kapandriti, Sykaminos, Polydendros, Markopoulou Oropou, Malakasa, Afidnes and Kalamos, according to the Kallikratis Program.
The Municipality has an area of 317,46km2 and a population of 33,769 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
Oropos is the seat of the Municipality of Oropos, which is 54 kilometers away from the center of Athens.
During the antiquity the area belonged to the Panionidae breed which is considered to be one of the 10 tribes of ancient Athens.
In the coming years the Municipality was mainly rural.
The newer years, the coastal Oropos and other settlements were holiday areas, while in recent years there are many permanent residents.
