The Municipality of Kamena Vourla belongs to the Prefecture of Fthiotida of the Region of Sterea Ellada and its present form is due to the consolidation of the former Municipalities of Agios Konstantinos, Kamena Vourla and Molos according to the Kallikratis Program.
The Municipality has an area of 340 km2 and a population of 12,090 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The headquarters of the Municipality are Kamena Vourla, where are also known homonymous spas.
The town of Kamena Vourla was formerly called "Paliohori". According to a tradition during the Ottoman domination during a raid by the Turks, the inhabitants were hiding among the rushes (a plant from which leaves are made baskets) to be saved. When the danger went away, and on a conversation with the residents, one said the phrase "let the rushes be good," and somehow stayed and took the name. As the "Burned Vourla" first appeared the name in 1912 in the royal decree of Georgios I where he recognized the Municipalities and Communities of the Prefecture of Fthiotida.
In the city are also the thermal baths of Kammena Vourla, for which the city is famous, since they are on the list of the most important thermal springs of Greece and of Europe. The springs are located at the foot of Kameni mountain and have been known since antiquity for their healing properties. The thermal springs are three and are radioactive and chlorosodium. The sources are used by two hydrotherapy plants and they differ in temperature. In Kamena Vourla, in addition to the visitors to the thermal baths, many are the ones who choose this particular seaside resort each year for their summer holidays. The area has many hotels.
Above the village of Mendenitsa dominates the Castle of Mendenitsa. It is located at an altitude of about 550 meters and was built in 1204 by the Lombard knight GuidoPallaviciniotan was founded the Marquis of Bonondas. Castro has a strategic position since it allows control over the passage of Thermopylae, the Maliakos and the Northern Evoikos Gulf thanks to its panoramic view. Because of this Mendenitsa was one of the most resistant Frankish states in our country since it was one of the few areas that remained in the Franks when the Kingdom passed to the Byzantines of the Despotate of Epirus in 1224. In 1414 Mendenitsa was conquered by the Turks and after prevailing everywhere the castle lost its strategic value. The castle was besieged by the chieftain Dyvouniotis during the Greek Revolution in 1821, and after a few days later he was delivered to the Greeks followed by the massacre of all the Turks from the region.
