The Municipality of Kalamaria belongs to the Peripheral Unity of Thessaloniki of the Region of Central Macedonia, has an area of ​​6,40km2 and a population of 91,518 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
In the area of ​​Kalamaria, finds have been found that prove to have been a settlement since Prehistoric times.
The name Kalamaria appeared from the 2nd century AD.
Substantially the area began to grow in population since 1920 with the establishment of refugees from Georgia. As of 1922, after the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the violent persecution of Greeks from Asia Minor and other parts of Turkey, the population of Kalamaria increased, since thousands of Greek refugees were found in Kalamaria from Asia Minor, Cappadocia, Eastern Thrace , but also from Pontos. There they created settlements, to which they gave names in memory of the lost homelands, such as New Fountain, Katyrli, Kouri, Chelis etc.
Kalamaria remained in the history of what happened in 1931 and was called "The Camp of Pogrom". In the district of Kalamaria, Campbell, who remained poor Jews, after the great fire of Thessaloniki, extreme nationalists were attacked, causing fires, disasters, injuries, and two deaths.
Today Kalamaria is one of the most beautiful areas of Thessaloniki, because it is washed by the sea. There are many dining outlets in the area, especially fish taverns, as well as nightlife shops.
