The Municipality of Istiaia-Edipsos belongs to the Prefecture of Evia in the Region of Sterea Ellada and its present form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Edipsos, Artemisios, Istiea and Oreon and the municipality of Lichados, according to the Kallikratis Program.
The municipality has an area of 499,3km2 and a population of 21,083 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Istiaia-Edipsos has been declared Istiaia which is built in a green plain and is a short distance from the sea.
Istiea was founded by the Persians of Thessaly. It was dominated by the Persians in 480 BC, but soon after Pericles and because Evia had distanced itself from the First Athenian Alliance, it imposed a harsh punishment on Istiea by persecuting the residents and forcing them to flee to Macedonia. He also distributed their estates to Athenians. After the end of the Peloponnesian War, Istiaia fell into the Spartan domination.
Istiea was a port station for the northeastern Aegean and Volos, but also for Iolkos and Nileia.
Edipsos is a seaside location and is known for its thermal spas, which are thought to have healing abilities. The healing springs of Edipsos have been known since the 4th century BC. They met periods of acne and decline, but the culmination of its glory met with the Roman Empire. The thermal spas of the area have visited important personalities such as Eleftherios Venizelos, Kostis Palamas, Maria Callas, Greta Garbo, Aristotle Onassis, Churchill and many others. Impressive is the Therma Sulla Hotel, which is housed in a magnificent neoclassical building dating from 1897 and is considered one of the world's top spa. There are still many hotels in the area.
The area of Artemisios is well known by the Battle of Artemision, which took place in 480 BC, alongside the Battle of Thermopylae between Greeks and Persians.
