The Municipality of Ilioupoli belongs to the Central Sector of Athens of the Attica Region. It has an area of 12.72km2 and a population of 78,153 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
In the area, there was the ancient municipality of Ebony (ancient settlement-city and municipality of Erechthida that was a breed of ancient Athens).
Findings that have been found prove a Mycenaean settlement.
During the Ottoman domination the area belonged to Carra Ali and was later sold.
The name of the Municipality was given by the Greek from Egypt, Cretan in origin, Drandakis, who studied in Cairo, Egypt. His company bought a lot of land in the area, which he landed. The name Ilioupolis gave it comes from the name of an ancient city of Egypt.
In the modern settlement, the first settlers were Lefkadians. Also cottages were built in the area. For many years, high reconstruction has been banned in Ilioupolis due to the nearby airport.
