The Municipality of Ierapetra belongs to the prefecture of Lassithi Crete and consists of the former municipalities of Ierapetra and Makri Yialos, as it emerged from the Kallikratis program.
The municipality currently has an area of ​​551.04 km2 and a population of 28,270 inhabitants, according to the 2011 census.

Ierapetra is the southernmost city of Europe and one of the richest in Crete. It is built around a cape at the site of ancient Ierapitna. It is a harbor with a long history.
