The Municipality of Hydra belongs to the Regional Unity of the Islands of the Attica Region and includes the islands of Hydra, Dokos, Agios Georgios and the neighboring smaller islands.
The Municipality has an area of 64,4km2 and a population of 1,966 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
Hydra along with Spetses are the most cosmopolitan islands of Argosaronikos. Hydra is 37m from Piraeus and is located between the Saronic Gulf and the Argolic Gulf.
The mansion and impressive settlement of Hydra stretches from the harbor and climbs up to the tops of the hills. The two-storey or three-storey houses with tiles are built one adherent to the other.
According to excavations on the island, a Mycenaean settlement was found. Hydra was developed in the 17th century AD. where he gained a great naval force at such a point that the years of the Napoleonic Wars had undertaken transport across the Mediterranean.
When the 1821 Revolution against the Turkish yoke began, Hydra had 150 ships. The captains of the island offered much of their property to equip their ships with cannons and heavy armor to cope with the Turkish fleet. The brothers Kountourioti, Miaoulis, Sachtouris, Tombazis and many others were some of these Hydra captains who united with the captains of Spetses and Psara, made great victories against the Turks. Their feats were celebrated, they became known throughout the world and were one of the reasons why the Greek revolution was successful.
Hydra has been a cosmopolitan island since the 1950s. Remarkable was the Lagoudera, a nightclub that operated from 1959 to 1990. From this center, all the Athenian poproism of the time has been celebrated for many years, as well as many famous foreign actors, politicians and entrepreneurs such as Empress Soraya, Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas, Jacqueline Kennedy, Stavros Niarchos, Leonard Cohen , Greta Garbo, Brigitte Bardo, and so many others.
The island is still a point of attraction during the summer months of both Greeks and foreign tourists. Hydra has many accommodations, dining venues and nightlife venues.
At the harbor of Hydra there are still today the mansions of Kountourioti, Tombazis, Miaoulis and others. The Tombazis mansion is an annex of the Fine Arts School since 1936, while the Tsamadou mansion operates the Shipmasters' School of Hydra. The Kountourioti mansion functions as a museum.
Friends of the sea can swim in the Cave. In Mandraki, Kaminia, Vlychos, which are closer to the port.
