The Municipality of Glyfada belongs to the Southern District of Athens of the Region of Attica. Its area is 25,37km2 and has a population of 87,305 inhabitants.
The Municipality is divided into two sections: Ano Glyfada which includes the areas of Terpsithea, Ano Glyfada, Pyrarni, Evryali, Aegli, Aixoni, Lawyers and Kato Glyfada which includes the center, Agios Nikolaos.
Glyfada borders with the municipalities of Elliniko-Argyroupoli and Voula, while the area of ​​Terpsithea catches part of Hymettus.
Glyfada was named in ancient times Auxion and its current name took it from the wells that were with fresh water.
In the area have been found finds of ancient buildings, Early Helladic cemetery, Early Christian tombs, vaulted tombs.
The area was uninhabited at the beginning of the 20th century. The first inhabitants settled after 1920. In the 1930s some pieces of land were given in Ano Glyfada with vouchers through the then newspaper . In 1940, the construction of the metropolitan church of Glyfada of Agios Konstantinos and Eleni began.
A large population increase began in the 1950s and this was due to the creation of Athens International Airport at the borders of Glyfada and Ellinikon. Also, from the 1940s to the early 1990s, Americans who worked at the American base in Ellinikos had chosen Glyfada as a place of residence. This fact affected the life of the Municipality.
Today Glyfada is one of the wealthiest financial municipalities of the Basin with cosmopolitan air and luxurious residences especially on the sea side. The main streets of Glyfada and its vicinity are full of shops, many of which are international houses. Also the area has restaurants, luxury restaurants and shops for every taste and desire.
Close to the center of Glyfada there is Golf Glyfada which covers an area of ​​400 acres. The municipality also has two marinas.
