The Municipality of Xiromerou belongs to the Prefecture of Aitoloakarnania of the Region of Western Greece and its present form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Astakos, Fthies and Alyzia, according to the Kallikratis Program.
The Municipality has an area of ​​584.82km2 and a population of 11.737 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.

Astakos is a beautiful seaside town that combines mountain and sea. The settlement is located inside a small bay and is washed by the deep blue waters of the Ionian Sea.
It is believed that the name Astakos comes from the ancient king Astakos. The present town was established after the Revolution of 1821 and was a seaport of the Byzantine Dragamestos and an important settlement in the Ottoman period.
In the area there is a Byzantine tower, as well as ruins of the ancient settlement. There are also lithographic shale deposits, once exploitable, mineral salt and hydrocarbon readings.
Astakos has a great naval tradition, has many points of particular architecture and many choose it for their summer getaways. It has remarkable beaches, such as the central beach, Goulia, Velas, Agrilia and others.
