The Municipality of Agios Vasilios belongs to the prefecture of Rethymno Crete and in its present form was created by the consolidation of the former municipalities of Lambis and Finikas according to the plan Kallikratis.
It connects the northern part of the prefecture with the southern coasts bordering the Libyan Sea.
The area of the municipality is 354.33 km2 and the population of 10.079 inhabitants according to the 2011 census.
The seat of the municipality of Agios Vasilios is Spili, which is considered to be a transport hub between the northern and southern regions of Rethymnon.
A characteristic feature of Spili is the 25 tidal headwater taps that are located in the village square and from which water springs all year round.
