The Municipality of East Mani belongs to the Prefecture of Laconia in the Peloponnese and its current form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Gytheion, Smyon, Oitylo and East Mani, according to the Kallikratis program.
The municipality has an area of ​​510.5 km2 and a population of 17,157 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of East Mani is Gythio and the historic seat is Areopolis.
The seaside town of Gytheion, which has one of the most important harbors in the prefecture, is an area full of legends and traditions. It is said that from the port of Gytheion, Paris and Helen Eleni began their journey to Troy. The ancient city of Gythion has to present the ancient theater, as well as ruins of Roman times. The city of Gythion presents many monuments both historically and traditionally.
The aristocratic Areopoli, the city of God Mars, houses houses built of stone, paved paths and stone-built churches. Many churches have been declared preserved monuments. In the square of 17 March 1821, a Greek revolution was declared against the Ottoman yoke. Areopoli is the homeland of Mavromichalides.
