The Municipality of Naxos belongs to the Cyclades Prefecture of the South Aegean Region and includes the island of Naxos and the islands of the Small Cyclades: Donousa, Koufonissia, Keros, Schinoussa and Iraklia.
The Municipality has an area of 495.76km2 and a population of 18.904 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Naxos is Naxos Town.

The island of Naxos is the largest and most fertile island of the Cyclades. It is located south of Mykonos and east of Paros.
According to some tradition it is said that Jupiter was born and raised in Naxos. This is why the inhabitants of the island gave their name to the highest mountain of Naxos. When Jupiter fell in love with Semeli, the daughter of the king of Thebes, she appeared to her with all the divine majesty, but the girl did not endure the intensity of her glow and she died out. Jupiter took the embryo from her belly and threw it on her thigh. From this point in the body of God Zeus, Dionysus, the God of wine, was born later in Naxos.
It is believed that the first inhabitants of Naxos were the Thracians and followed by Kares with the head of Naxos, from where he took the name of the island. Residents were, according to findings, from the Neolithic age.
Naxos had great power in the years of Cycladic culture and this is seen from the cemeteries and finds of the time. Marble figurines are also known worldwide with the simple and strict line. It was also a great naval force, and it even founded colonies. All this has resulted in the island having economic power and bloom in the arts, especially in sculptures. Known is the Apollo statue of 8m dedicated by Naxos to Delos, as well as the lions on Lion's Avenue in Delos.
During the Persian Wars Naxos was forced to fight alongside the Persians. Later she participated, despite her will, in the Delos Alliance. For a short time Sparta's influence, but then returned under the supervision of Athens. Then Naxos, like all the Cycladic islands, was subjugated to the Macedonians, the Rhodians and the Romans. In 1207, Markos Sanoudos, the leader of the Fourth Crusade, founded the Duchy of the Aegean, based in Naxos. In 1537 the island received the Barbarossa raid, and in 1579 Naxos was subjugated to the Ottomans.
Naxos is considered by the summer destinations to be preferred by families. But it does not envy any of the other Cycladic islands in terms of nightlife. It has many hotels and rooms for every taste, as well as excellent food shops, since the island produces many products such as cheeses.
Denominations are the beaches of Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna.
The island's monuments are many. The most well-known of all is Portara, the enormous surviving gate of the Temple of Apollo at the Palatia islet, which was joined to the island of Naxos with a lane in 1919. According to the myth at this point Theseus left Ariadne and found it Dionysus. He made her husband and raised her to Mount Olympus. There Zeus made Ariadne immortal. This myth inspired composer Richard Strauss to write the famous opera Ariadne in Naxos (1912).
North of Naxos Town lies Mycenaean settlement. At the top of the city there is the Venetian castle. Other important monuments are the Sanoudos tower, the Christi tower, the imperial statue of Apollo at Pachia Ammos, the temple of Demeter in GyroulaSagri, the ruins of the Jesuit palace in the region of Melanes, the temple of Ypapanti Naxos - Catholic Metropolis, where the a double-faced icon of 11th-century Virgin Mary of the Eleoussis by Nicomedia of Asia Minor.

The islands of Donoussa, Irakleia, Schinoussa, Koufonissia are among the islands that have been touring in recent years.
