The Municipality of Nafplion belongs to the Prefecture of Argolida in the Peloponnese. Its current form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Midea, Asini, Nea Tiryntha and Nafplio, according to the Kallikratis program.
The municipality has an area of 387,78km2 and a population of 33,356 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The headquarters of the Municipality of Nafplion are Nafplion.
Nafplio is considered to be one of the most beautiful coastal towns in the Peloponnese. His name is said to be due to his son Poseidon, who is also his founder. This city played an important role in the creation of Greece after its liberation from the Turks. Nafplio was the first capital of the Greek state until 1834 and the first governor, John Kapodistrias, was assassinated there.
Palamidi Castle is the most prominent city attraction. It is located at an altitude of 216 meters from the city. Palamidi was fortified for the first time by the Venetians during the Venetian occupation (1686-1715) and then went into the hands of the Turks until the liberation in 1822. In this castle was imprisoned the hero of the revolution Theodoros Kolokotronis.
Bourtzi is a small fortified island in the bay of Nafplion. It was for the first time fortified during the period of the Aetolocracy (1389-1540). It was then occupied by the Turks and after 1822 it came to the hands of the Greeks. The first years after the liberation hosted the demons. The 50s functioned as a hotel and during the summer months music nights are organized.
