The Municipality of Kefalonia belongs to the Prefecture of Kefalonia in the region of Ionian islands and its present form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Argostoli, Elieus-Pronouns, Erisos, Livathos, Paliki, Sami, Pylarion and the Omalon community, according to the Kallikratis program.
The municipality has an area of 788,32km2 and a population of 35,801 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Kefalonia is Argostoli.
Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Sea. It is said to be the island of paradoxes, and that is why strange geological phenomena are observed because of the great geological disruptions that have been made from time to time. The archaeological finds of our region show that there was a human presence on the island from the Paleolithic era. Until 1864, when Kefalonia joined with Greece, many peoples, such as the Dorians, and the conquerors - Romans, Venetians, Turks, French, Russians, and English - lived in the island.
Argostoli was built on the debris of the old city, which was flattened by an earthquake in 1953. It is located on the southwest coast of Kefalonia on the side of a bay and next to a lagoon. On this, the English, the years that governed the island, built a bridge with many bows.
Lixouri is the second largest city in Kefalonia, which was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1953. It is located on a peninsula and is connected by ferry boat to Argostoli.
The island has beautiful beaches, such as the one of Myrtos which is considered to be one of the best in the world, but also of the Petanas and Platia Ammos. Of particular interest are the caves of Kefalonia, such as Melissani, Agioi Theodoroi and others.
