The Municipality of Argos-Mycenae belongs to the Prefecture of Argolida in the Peloponnese. Its current form exists after the consolidation of the former municipalities of Argos, Koutsopodi, Lerna, Lykerias, Mycenaeans, Nea Kios and the communities of Aleas and Achladokambos, according to the Kallikratis program.
The Municipality of Argos-Mycenaeans has an area of 1002,6 km2 and a population of 42,022 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the municipality is Argos and Mycenae's historic seat.
Argos is a modern city today, but with a long history. The Pelasgians were the most ancient inhabitants and then inhabited by settlers, such as the Phoenicians and the Egyptians. Argos was a powerful city and participated in several wars, such as the Trojan and the Peloponnesian. It was conquered by the Romans, the Franks, the Venetians and the Turks. The archaeological sites of Argos, such as the Ancient Agora that was organized since the 6th c. B.C. and the Ancient Theater of the 5th c. which is considered to be one of the largest ancient theaters in Greece.
The most famous point of the Municipality of Argos-Mycenae is of course the Mycenae which attract thousands of visitors from all over the world.
The first major Greek civilization, known as Mycenaean civilization, flourished in Mycenae. According to Mycenae, Perseus was founded by Mycenae, and then there was the generation of Atreides, Patriarch of Agia Amnonas the father of Atreus. The first inhabitants date back to the Neolithic and Early Helladic period around 3000-2000 BC. From 1600 to 1200 BC, this great civilization, which was discovered by Henry Schliemann, brought to light the royal tombs. Impressive are the Tholos Tombs, such as Atreus, the palace center, the underground cistern, the cyclopean walls, the religious center.
