The Municipality of Ancient Olympia belongs to the Prefecture of Ileia and its present form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Ancient Olympia, Lasionos, Lampia and Foloi, according to the Kallikratis plan.
The Municipality of Ancient Olympia has an area of 544.88 km2 and a population of 13.409 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the municipality is Ancient Olympia, which was an important religious and sports center of antiquity.
This area is world famous for its archaeological site and its history, since the Olympic Games were born there and was held every four years. The rivers Alfeios and Kledeos created the Althos, part sanctuary for God Zeus. According to Pindar, the hero Hercules delineated Althi with a wall, where Claude was on the west and the stadium was on the east. The wall had many gates, most important to the west, where the processions passed. From there, the Pompey Street crossed the Alth and reached the Stadium. On the eastern side was the hippodrome. Inside the wall there were the temples of Zeus, Hera, the administrative buildings, the altars and the votive offerings. Outside the wall were the sports facilities, the hostels, the baths.
The huge temple of Zeus, as well as the temple of Hera, is in a prestigious position. The temple of Zeus is one of the most important buildings of Olympia and one of the most important temples of Greece built in 470-456 BC by the architect Livonas. Heraion, the temple of Hera, was the most ancient of Olympia and is believed to have been built in 600 BC. Other buildings have also been saved. In the same area, the Archaeological Museum of Olympia has a permanent exhibition. One of his most important exhibits is the famous sculpture of Hermes of Praxiteles.
