The Municipality of Distomo - Arachova - Antikyra belongs to the Prefecture of Boeotia of the Region of Sterea Ellada and its present form is due to the consolidation of the former districts of Distomo and Arachova and of the community of Antikyra, according to the Kallikratis Program.
The Municipality has an area of ​​292.7km2 and a population of 8.188 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Distomo-Arachova-Antikyra is Distomo.
Distomo is located south of Mount Parnassus and has an important history since ancient times. In the area was the ancient Phobos town of Imvosos, which was destroyed by Philip during the Holy War and was captured by the Romans in 198 BC. During the years of the Revolution, and in particular in 1827, Kiouteshis with thousands of troops tried to occupy Distomo, where they had found shelter of 300 Souliotes with leader Noti Botsari. After battles and with the help of Karaiskakis and the few soldiers they managed to escape the Turks.
Distomo, however, became globally known when, during the Second World War, the German occupation troops carried out massive cleansing of the civilian population of the region, as a retaliation for Greek rebels who acted in these parts.
The German conquerors killed a total of 218 inhabitants of Distomo and other villages. Among the dead were 20 infants and 45 children.
Sights of the area are the Nazi Victims Museum and the Mausoleum of Victims of June 10, 1944. Visitors also deserve to visit the Monastery of Hosios Loukas, founded by the monk Loukas Steririotis (945-953).
Arachova is the most cosmopolitan winter resort. Many are considered Mykonos of winter. It features state-of-the-art facilities for winter skiing enthusiasts, since there is the Parnassos ski center within walking distance of Arachova. The area has luxury hotels and hostels, dining outlets and nightlife boutiques.
Arachova is built on the southern slopes of Parnassus. It is a commercial and economic center of the region and has developed handicraft factories and dairies. The inhabitants of the area were the first in Central Greece, who rose up in 1821 against the Turks.
Antikyra is a seaside location and is famous for its beautiful beaches.
