The Municipality of Alimos belongs to the Southern District of Athens of the Attica Region. It has an area of ​​5,909km2 and a population of 41,720 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011. The municipality borders on the south with the Municipality of Elliniko-Argyroupoli, northwest with the Municipality of Palaio Faliro and northeast with the Municipality of Agios Dimitrios.

The name Alimos comes either from the ancient word als meaning sea, or from the alimony plant that grows on coastal sites, or from the word famine with the the deprivation a means to hide the hunger.

 The area was first inhabited, according to the findings, the Neolithic period (5,000 BC). The ancient years in the area were the Municipality of Alimondos (ancient settlement-city and municipality of Leonidas which was one of the tribes of ancient Athens). The Municipality of Alimondos was the homeland of the historian Thucydides.

The Municipality had a strong participation in Athenian events in Geometric, as well as in the Archaic and Classical periods.

During the Ottoman domination the area consisted of estates and belonged mainly to Brahma Pasha and Hassan Pasha.

The Alimos Municipality began to develop, in the recent years of the 40s, when affluent Athenians turned to this coastal municipality to build holiday homes. Since the 1970s the area has become densely populated.

In the Municipality belongs the Alimos Marina, which is one of the largest in Greece and can accommodate more than a thousand boats.

In the vagaries of the Alimos Municipality there is the Allied Cemetery that was created after the end of World War II and 2,067 dead allies of Greece, such as British, Australians, Canadians, and others have been buried.

In the archaeological finds, among others there have been found remains of a 6th century BC temple in the area of ​​Agia Anna and on it was built a Byzantine church that was destroyed during the Second World War. Ruins of an ancient amphitheater have also been found.

Alimos beach is one of the free beaches for swimming and is preferred by many sea lovers.
