The Municipality of Eretria belongs to the Prefecture of Evia in the Region of Sterea Hellas and its current form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Amarynthia and Eretria, according to the Kallikratis Program.
The Municipality has an area of 58,60 sq. Km and a population of 13,053 inhabitants, according to the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Eretria is the town of Eretria.
Eretria has a rich story over the centuries. It was, along with Chalkida, one of the most important cities in antiquity. From the findings, it is believed that the area existed from the Mycenaean years. Probably Eretria had taken part in the Trojan war. The first inhabitants were Avantes, a sex that belonged to the Ionian race, and for this reason Eretria always had good relations with Miletus and the Cyclades. Since the 8th century BC, Eretria has founded cities in the northern Aegean, has created a major navy and has been commercially booming. Though it broke with Chalkida, it did not lose its power, and when the Ionian revolution broke out, it helped the Ionians by sending a naval help. For this reason, when the Persians passed to Greece, they attacked Eretria, burned it and transferred the Persians to Persia. The city was rebuilt and was one of the first members of the First Alliance of the Athenian Alliance and later of the Second World War. In 198 BC the Romans destroyed Eretria, but the city managed to maintain its economic and spiritual acne.
After the destruction of Psara in 1824, many refugee fishermen were settled in Eretria and for this reason the area was also named New Psara.
Today, Eretria, located in the southern Euboea bay, is a tourist seaside resort with hotels, shops and nightlife. Important sights of the area are the ancient theater of Eretria, the archaeological museum, as well as Pezonisi, which is something like a small islet, an extension of the harbor of the city and has the name Island of Dreams.
