The Municipality of Salamina-Ampelakia belongs to the Peripheral Unity of the Attica Region and its present form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Salamis and Ambelakia, as well as the neighboring islands, according to the Kallikratis Program.
The Municipality has an area of 96,09km2 and a population of 39,283 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Salamina-Ampelakia is the city of Salamis.
The island of Salamis is the closest to Athens and is known historically by the Naval Battle of Salamis in 480 BC, which was one of the most important battles in human history.
Salamis was the island of Ajax, a hero of Homer, who took part in the Trojan War. Indeed, the ancient city of the hero Aiada is considered to be in the area of Aiadeion.
In the Battle of Salamis between Greeks and Persians the final winner was the Greeks. The leader of the Greeks was Themistocles and Persians king Xerxes, who had set up his throne across the island, on the Mount Egaleo, in order to follow the outcome of the naval battle. At the cape of Kynosouras there is a tomb of the dead of the Battle.
Important buildings of Salamis are the metropolitan church of Agios Minas of 1869, which has works of the famous sculptor Giannoulis Chalepas. In the church of Agios Dimitrios (1806), there are also works by Halepa and holy icons by Polychronis Lembesis. There is also the tomb of the 1821 fighter Georgios Karaiskakis.
In the area of Ampelakia is the ancient city of Salamis. According to the Herodotus historian's testimony in the area, the Greek fleet had anchored before the naval battle.
