The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos belongs to the prefecture of Lassithi, Crete and was created by the pre-existing municipalities of Agios Nikolaos, Neapolis and Vrachasio, according to the Kallikratis plan.
The area of the current municipality is 511.99km2 and the population is 27.074 inhabitants, with the 2011 census.
The seat of the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos is Agios Nikolaos, which is also the capital of the entire Prefecture of Lasithi, and the historic seat of Neapolis.
Agios Nikolaos or Gialos, as the locals call it, is a small but picturesque town with its harbor and its own lake, which its inhabitants call Vouliagmeni. There are many stories and myths about the lake. The oldest myths say that the gods Athena and Artemis lived in the lake. Others claim that it has no bottom or is connected with the volcano of Santorini because it is said that during the last eruption the lake's waters inflated and flooded the area. What has been discovered, however, is that at the bottom of the lake there is war material left by the German occupiers shortly before leaving the island in World War II.
The area of Agios Nikolaos, according to indications, was first inhabited in the Minoan Minoan years (2100-1560BC). Today the city has cosmopolitan air, great tourist infrastructure and lively nightlife.
Neapolis is a picturesque town surrounded by olive trees and orchards. Since the Venetian domination there was a settlement called Kares. In 1340 there was born Petros Philaros, who later in 1340 was called Pope of Rome under the name Alexander E.
The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos belongs to the island of Spinalonga, which was named after the Venetians. At the time of their conquest they built on the island the impressive castle (1579-1586), which is considered to be one of the best military works of the time and for many improbable. On the island of Spinalonga, from 1903 to 1957, originally Cretans and later from all over Europe settled, patients suffering from Hansen's disease were lepers. The Hanseic people created their own community, were assured of electricity, water food and medical equipment. On the island of Spinalonga during the occupation the conquerors did not dare to board. The leprosy was closed when the disease was discovered. Today, Spinalonga visits thousands of tourists every year.
