The Municipality of Ikaria belongs to the Prefecture of Samos and is an island of the Region of the North Aegean. Its current form is due to the consolidation of the former municipalities of Agios Kirikos, Raches and Evdilos, according to the Kallikratis program.
The municipality that includes the neighboring islands has an area of 254,41km2 and a population of 8,423 inhabitants, based on the latest census of 2011.
The seat of the Municipality of Ikaria is Agios Kirykos.
Ikaria took its name from the mythical Icarus, son of Daidalos, who escaped from the Labyrinth of Crete (Minoan times), having waxed wings on their backs. Icarus, excited by the flying in the sky, did not hear his father fly up to the sun, causing the high temperature to melt his new wings and drown him in the sea. This sea was named Ikarios and the island of Ikaria.
In the 9th century BC in Ikaria the Ionians settled. The island became a member of the Athenian Alliance. Later he was conquered by the Venetians and in 1524 by the Turks. In 1912, the inhabitants of Ikaria rebelled and expelled the Turks. For four months the island remained independent as the Ikarian state and was then incorporated into Greece.
Agios Kirykos is also a port of the island. The name was taken from the youngest Christian witness, Kirykos, who was killed at the age of three.
The island has picturesque villages and excellent beaches.
