The municipality of Acharnon or Menidi, as it used to be called, belongs to the Regional Unit of Eastern Attica and its present form is due to the unification of the former municipalities of Acharnes and Thrakomakedones, according to the Kallikratis Program. Part of Parnitha belongs to the municipality.

The municipality has an area of ​​107,857km2 and a population of 106,943 inhabitants, based on the last census of 2011. It is 10 km from the center of Athens.

Headquarters of the Municipality of Acharnes were designated Acharnes.

Acharnes was an ancient municipality that belonged to the Oenida tribe (one of the 10 tribes of Athens). The famous comedy of the great ancient poet Aristophanes refers to the locals.

It was one of the largest and most populous municipalities of ancient Attica and even provided 3,000 soldiers to aid the Athenians during the Peloponnesian War.

The area has important archaeological finds, such as the Tholos Mycenaean tomb of the 13th century, an ancient theater of the 4th century BC.

At the foot of Mount Parnitha it is believed that the tomb of the ancient poet Sophocles has been found.
